Cold-Formed Sections Types
There are 2 types of cold formed sections: Structural shapes and panels. Apart from these two shapes, there are closed, open and built-up sections like Cee sections, zee sections, double channel I beams with stiffened flanges, hat sections with and without intermediate stiffeners, box sections, U sections and much more. These are used in buildings for structural functions like eave struts, purlins and girts along with joists and studs.
Applications of Cold-Formed Sections
Cold- formed sections can be used for pre-engineered buildings and for a whole roof, floor and wall systems. They can even be used for individual framing members like studs, joists and truss members.
These sections can serve as primary and secondary structures, from a structural standpoint. The perfect example of cold- formed steel as primary structures is the steel stud load bearing wall. Steel studs offers the lateral support to exterior wall finish are secondary structures since they rely on the primary structure for support.
